Starbucks Embraces Plant-Based Choices with No More Extra Charges

Good news for fans of non-dairy drinks—Starbucks is eliminating the extra cost for plant-based milk.

In a major menu update, the coffee giant announced that starting November 7, customers will no longer pay a surcharge for swapping regular milk with alternatives like soy, almond, oat, or coconut milk. This move is expected to lower prices by up to 10% for nearly half of Starbucks’ customer base, who regularly choose dairy-free options.

“Customization is at the heart of the Starbucks experience,” said CEO and Chairman Brian Niccol. “Removing the charge for non-dairy milk reflects our commitment to making every customer feel welcome and included.”

This long-awaited change comes after years of criticism from vegan communities and animal rights advocates. High-profile supporters, including Sir Paul McCartney, have called out Starbucks for penalizing customers with dietary preferences or restrictions.

The extra charge had also sparked legal action earlier this year, when a lawsuit alleged that the added cost unfairly impacted individuals with allergies or special dietary needs.

The removal of the surcharge is one of several changes Starbucks is rolling out. Also on November 7, the company will discontinue its controversial Oleato line—drinks made with olive oil—as well as phase out coffee nut syrup and scale back on discounts and promotions. These adjustments are part of a broader strategy to streamline service and reduce long wait times.

Since taking on the CEO role, Niccol has promised to revamp the Starbucks experience with a renewed focus on speed, customization, and quality.

“This is just the beginning,” Niccol emphasized. “We’re making changes to ensure every visit to Starbucks is not just satisfying, but exceptional.”
