A Trippy Pom-Pom Wonderland Is Inviting New Yorkers to Connect Through Eye Contact

A one-of-a-kind art exhibit in New York City is drawing in curious passersby — and encouraging them to lock eyes with strangers.

Titled “Bobby Anspach: Nothing Beautiful,” the immersive installation showcases the eccentric work of late artist Bobby Anspach. The exhibit features bizarre, playful structures filled with pom-poms, wires, lights, and bright colors — a mix between a child’s dream and a mad inventor’s lab.

Anspach, known for his love of pom-poms, created these pieces as part of his series Places for Continuous Eye Contact. Two main installations are on display: one invites pairs to sit inside a tent-like structure, bundled in pom-pom blankets under helmets decorated with fluffy spheres; the other offers a solo experience where visitors lie on a hospital bed under a glowing dome of pom-poms and mirrored light.

“It’s like a mix of meditation and psychedelia,” said Sara Griffin, a spokesperson for the exhibit in the Meatpacking District. “It’s meant to pull people into the moment — into themselves and each other.”

Visitors are guided through the experience by trained actors. Without much explanation, participants wear an eye patch and headphones, listen to music, and sit in stillness for three and a half minutes — a moment many describe as deeply emotional.

“It was surreal, like stepping into a dream,” said Anna Hogan, one guest. “It pushed me into reflection and made me feel part of something bigger.”

For others, the sensory experience sparked tears — or even impromptu dancing.

But the exhibit carries deeper meaning: it’s a tribute to Bobby Anspach, who tragically passed away in 2022 at age 34. His parents, Jane and Bob, now carry his legacy forward through the Bobby Anspach Studios Foundation.

“He wanted to share this gift of hope,” said his mother, Jane. “He believed this kind of connection could heal the world.”

«Bobby Anspach: Nothing Beautiful» is open Fridays through Sundays at Azure, 38 Little West 12th Street, until November 10.
