In an unusual political taste test, a food writer spent a day eating like each presidential hopeful — Kamala Harris and Donald Trump — and discovered just how different their daily menus really are… except for a shared love of Doritos.
Kamala Harris’ Menu: Light, Global, and Grounded
Kamala Harris kicks off her day with grape bran cereal and almond milk — often eaten over the kitchen sink. She skips coffee in favor of green tea, and her lunch reflects her Indian roots: creamy curd rice seasoned with salt, pomegranate, yogurt, and warm spices. Optional extras include green chile, coriander, and cashews sautéed in coconut oil.
Dinner is heartier: a homemade gumbo brimming with Andouille sausage, chicken, shrimp, and rich seasonings. For dessert? A decadent bourbon pecan caramel cake.
The verdict? “The food was flavorful, comforting, and left me feeling balanced, energized, and well-rested,” wrote Bennett Rea for Food & Wine.
Donald Trump’s Diet: Fast, Fierce, and Fried
Trump’s relationship with fast food is legendary — partly due to his mistrust of food prepared out of sight. He starts the day not with food, but with several cans of Diet Coke before 9 a.m., skipping breakfast altogether.
Lunch is a thick, well-done steak drowned in ketchup. Dinner is a full McDonald’s feast: two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and a chocolate shake.
Rea described the Trump day as “groggy, bloated, and oddly victorious,” noting the ketchup was “a necessary lubricant to survive the steak.”
By the next morning, Rea said he felt like he had a college hangover and struggled to make it through his daily routine.
So, whose diet would you vote for? The grounding, globally inspired meals of Kamala Harris, or the indulgent, fast-food-forward fare of Donald Trump?
This culinary experiment offered more than just flavors — it was a reflection of personality, policy, and pace. One nourishes the soul. The other fries it.
